As a young boy growing up in Maine, all I wanted to do when I grew up was to have the chance to ski in every ski area that I could dream of. The Rocky Mountains were a must, as was Europe and especially, France. During my University years, I taught skiing on weekends in Breckenridge and after graduating from the University of Denver, I taught in Vail for five seasons at Gold Peak and Mid Vail as a full-time, private instructor.

The area around Alicante in Valencia on Spain's eastern coast has been inhabited for over 7,000 years, and the city has a rich historic tradition.

The Castle of Santa Bárbara dominates Alicante's skyline and stands on the 166m high Mount Benacantil in the center of the city. This Moorish castle complex was constructed during the 9th century, but artifacts dating back to the Bronze Age have been found on the site. Captured from the Moors by Alfonso de Castilla on December 4th, 1248, the castle was named after Saint Barbara, whose feast is celebrated on that day. After being besieged by the French in 1691 and occupied by the English in the early 18th century, it fell into decline and was abandoned in the late 19th century. 1963 saw it being opened to the public as a tourist attraction.
